The Alliance Lately: Issue No. 85

It’s late October and that means two things: the Twin Cities Film Festival is taking place and horror movies are being watched.

Both have been a focal point for MNFCA members, who’ve reviewed films shown at TCFF, such as “The Holdovers,” and have written about horror flicks new and old. They’ve also been keeping up with the latest releases.

The Alliance Lately: Issue No. 84

October is here and of course that means it’s time for horror movies.

Several MNFCA members are reviewing scary flicks both new and old. However, that’s not the only genre getting noticed. As usual Minnesota critics are taking a look at all types of movies and gearing up for this year’s Twin Cities Film Festival.

Alliance Lately: Issue No. 82

The summer movie season has wrapped up and several film festivals are now on deck.

As a result, members of the MNFCA used the last few weeks to review the final summer movies and several smaller releases. Many also published retrospective reviews of older films.

Alliance Lately: Issue No. 81

“Barbie” continued to dominate the box office over the last month but August still had plenty of other releases in cinemas.

The giant monster sequel “The Meg 2,” the comic book adaptation “Blue Beetle,” the vampire flick “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” and more all came out in theaters in the last several weeks. Members of the MNFCA were on hand to review those and many more.

Alliance Lately: Issue No. 79

The summer movie season is rolling along with tentpole blockbusters continuing to headline cinemas.

Most recently, sequels to “Indiana Jones” and “Mission: Impossible” have been hitting the screens, and members of the MNFCA have reviewed them and many more films. They’ve also been sharing their favorite movies of 2023 so far.

Alliance Lately: Issue No. 78

There’s a great deal of variety at theaters right now.

In recent weeks, the comic book action film “The Flash” was released, as well as the animated feature “Elemental” and the drama “Past Lives.” MNFCA members have been keeping up with those three and many more with several reviews.

Alliance Lately: Issue No. 77

As usual, the summer movie season has been full of action and MNFCA members have been all over the latest genre films getting released.

Recently, Minnesota critics reviewed “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and “The Flash.” Movie coverage didn’t end there, though, as members covered plenty of other new, smaller releases, and revisited older pictures.

MNFCA at the MSPIFF 2023

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Film Society recently concluded its annual festival, which ran from April 13-27.

The Society has held the MSP International Film Festival for 42 years. This year’s edition had nearly 200 films from all around the world.

Watching several of the films were members of the Minnesota Film Critics Alliance. Members from the metro area watched festival-shown movies including “Dreamin’ Wild,” “Showing Up” and much more.

Better Know the Alliance: Summer Movie Memories

As film critics, we love movies. That love is often built over time at one place, the movie theater.

That can be especially true during the summer months. Many of us start off as movie fans first and the big summer blockbusters that brought us to the theaters helped kick off a lifelong love of film.

‘Nomadland’ wins big prize in inaugural MNFCA Awards

The following are the results of the first ever Minnesota Film Critics Alliance Awards.

The Alliance is a 17-member group and for this year’s awards, 14 participated in nominating and voting on the best of 2020. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, films released into March were eligible, allowing some titles watched in 2021 to be included.
