October is here and of course that means it’s time for horror movies.
Several MNFCA members are reviewing scary flicks both new and old. However, that’s not the only genre getting noticed. As usual Minnesota critics are taking a look at all types of movies and gearing up for this year’s Twin Cities Film Festival.
Check out what the Alliance has been up to lately.
Nicholas Palodichuk
On the St. Paul Filmcast, Palodichuk spoke with indie filmmaker Dan Howard’s movie “Psychlight,” which he wrote and directed.
Also, for their series Kyle and Nick on Film, Palodichuk was joined by fellow MNFCA member Kyle Goethe to review 1979’s “North Dallas Forty,” 1983’s “Fire and Ice,” 1984’s “Repo Man,” 1988’s “Waxwork” and 1989’s “The Church.”
As part of the series, Goethe also reviewed 1972’s “Grave of the Vampire,” 1982’s “Basket Case” and 2021’s “Don’t Breathe 2.” Palodichuk, meanwhile, talked about 1991’s “Run” and 1993’s “The Program.”
Mark McPherson
For his site, McPherson reviewed recent releases “Dumb Money,” “The Creator” and “The Exorcist: Believer.” He also reviewed 2022’s “The Northman” for Twin Cities Geek.
Ruth Maramis
At FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed 2023 films “Sitting in Bars with Cake,” “The Creator,” “Flora and Son” and “Fair Play.” She also wrote a preview of the upcoming Twin Cities Film Festival.
Matthew Liedke
On his site, Liedke reviewed recent releases “The Equalizer 3,” “A Haunting in Venice,” “Expend4bles” and “The Exorcist Believer.”
Frank Lee
At the Wadena Pioneer Journal, Lee previewed the Whiskey Creek Film Festival at the community’s Cozy Theatre.
Danny Haslach
On his podcast FilmBird, new episodes centered on the comedy “Bottoms” and the horror movie “No One Will Save You.”
Paul McGuire Grimes
For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed new films “The Exorcist: Believer,” “Totally Killer,” “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” and “V/H/S/85.” He also appeared on ABC affiliate KSTP’s series Twin Cities Live to talk movies on Sept. 22 and Oct. 6.
Kyle Goethe
For his 31 Days of Horror series, Goethe reviewed 1990’s “Troll 2,” 2006’s “Haeckel’s Tale” and 2009’s “Best Worst Movie,” as well as 2023 releases “The Nun II,” “Haunted Mansion” and “Saw X.”
Hunter Friesen
At The Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed new films “Lee,” “The Creator,” “The Exorcist: Believer” and “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.”
Brian Eggert
On Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed recent releases “No One Will Save You,” “The Creator,” “Fair Play,” “V/H/S/85,” Pet Sematary: Bloodlines,” “The Exorcist: Believer” and “Totally Killer.”
He also wrote about 1993’s “Last Action Hero,” the “Scream” series and 2009’s “The House of the Devil.”
Eli Brau
At Cinephile Corner, Brau reviewed recent releases “The Meg 2” and “V/H/S/85.”
Joe Botten
At his site, Botten reviewed new movies “Dumb Money,” “It Lives Inside,” “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines,” “What You Wish For,” “Fair Play,” “The Exorcist: Believer,” “Totally Killer,” “She Came to Me,” “V/H/S/85” “The Mill” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
Also, for his 31 Days to Scare series, Botten wrote about 1971’s “Play Misty for Me,” 1980’s “Alligator,” 1983’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” “1989’s “Cutting Class” and 2008’s “The Ruins.” Additionally, he reviewed films at 2023’s Fantastic Fest.
