April is nearly done but spring hasn’t quite sprung yet in Minnesota, with the state experiencing some late snow and cold.
No issue for Minnesota critics, though, who kept busy inside theaters seeing the latest Hollywood has to offer. MNFCA members reviewed the likes of “Renfield,” “Air,” and much more.
Many also attended the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival. That event concludes Thursday, so keep an eye out for a release on the MNFCA’s coverage on the MSP IFF.
For now, here’s what the Alliance has been up to lately.
Joe Botten
At his site, Botten reviewed new films “Beau is Afraid,” “Judy Blume Forever,” “The Covenant,” “The Tank,” “To Catch a Killer,” “Somewhere in Queens,” “Mafia Mamma,” “Renfield,” “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” “One True Loves,” “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” and “Paint.”
Eli Brau
For A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed recent releases “Renfield,” “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor among Thieves,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Air,” “The Pope’s Exorcist,” “Ghosted,” and “Evil Dead Rise.” He also wrote about 2021’s “Dune” and 2019’s “Midsommar.”
Brian Eggert
At Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed the new films “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” “Showing Up,” “Renfield,” “The Tank,” “Ghosted” and “Evil Dead Rise.”
Hunter Friesen
For the Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed new films “Beau is Afraid,” “Renfield,” “Chevalier” and “To Catch a Killer.”
Kyle Goethe and Nicholas Palodichuk
For their series Kyle and Nick on Film, Goethe and Palodichuk discussed 1952’s “The Bad and the Beautiful,” 1953’s “Pickup on South Street,” 2017’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and 2022’s “Baby Ruby.”
Paul McGuire Grimes
For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed new films “Showing Up,” “Renfield” and “The Covenant.”
Matt Hambidge
At News From the Couch, Hambidge reviewed the new action/comedy “Ghosted.”
Melinda Lavine
For the Duluth News Tribune, Lavine wrote about Duluth artist Jonathan Thunder being the feature of a PBS documentary, part of their American Masters series “In the Making.”
Frank Lee
Lee wrote about the new films “Air” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” for Forum Communications.
Matthew Liedke
At his site, Liedke reviewed April releases including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Air” and “Renfield.”
Ruth Maramis
At FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed major releases “Air” and “Renfield,” as well as the indie picture “The Year of the Dog.”
Mark McPherson
For his own site, McPherson reviewed the action/comedy “Renfield,” the anime film “Suzume” and the drama “Beau is Afraid.” He also wrote a column about audiences misreading and/or misinterpreting critic reviews in the wake of the “Mario” movie.
Additionally, he produced a video about physical film media compared to streaming, and hosted a presentation on movies at Anime Detour 2023.
