Alliance Lately: Issue No. 69

A new year has started but MNFCA members aren’t quite done with 2022 yet.

Over the last few weeks of the year, Minnesota critics spent time reviewing new blockbusters such as the “Avatar” sequel, and award contenders like “Babylon.” Check out what they had to think on those movies and much more in this Alliance Lately.

Eli Brau

At A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed new releases β€œChristmas Bloody Christmas,” β€œThe Banshees of Inisherin,” β€œAvatar: The Way of Water,” β€œBardo,” β€œThe Apology,” β€œBullet Train,” β€œFaults,” β€œBabylon,” β€œGlass Onion” and β€œI Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

Brian Eggert

For Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed new films β€œAvatar: The Way of Water,” β€œBabylon,” β€œWhite Noise,” β€œThe Whale” and β€œLiving.” He also wrote about 1986’s β€œTop Gun” and 1995’s β€œStrange Days.”

Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl

On recent Horror Rewind episodes, Florence and Hafdahl discussed the new Shudder picture β€œA Wounded Fawn” and the Christmas thriller β€œViolent Night.”

Hunter Friesen

At the Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed new movies β€œBabylon,” β€œI Wanna Dance With Somebody” and β€œThe Pale Blue Eye.”

Jay Gabler

For the Duluth News Tribune, Gabler wrote about the recent release β€œTar.” He also wrote about β€œThe Mighty Ducks,” which he watched for the first time.

Kyle Goethe

At his site, Goethe reviewed the 2022 release β€œMy Policeman.” He was also joined by fellow MNFCA member Nicholas Palodichuk for the series Kyle and Nick on Film to discuss 1983’s β€œTrading Places,” 1997’s β€œThe Sweet Hereafter” and 2015’s β€œKrampus.” They also reviewed β€œBones and All,” as well as β€œShe Said” from 2022.

Paul McGuire Grimes

For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed recent releases β€œWomen Talking,” β€œThe Whale,” β€œAvatar: The Way of Water,” β€œBabylon” and β€œPearl.” He also appeared on Twin Cities Live on Dec. 16.

Matt Hambidge

At News on the Couch, Hambidge reviewed new films β€œBabylon,” β€œLiving,” β€œI Wanna Dance with Somebody” and β€œPuss in Boots: The Last Wish.”

Danny Haslach

Haslach’s podcast Film Bird had a new episode predicting who will be the best directors over the next 20 years.

Frank Lee

For the Brainerd Dispatch, Lee wrote about new films β€œThe Menu” and β€œPuss in Boots: The Last Wish.”

Matthew Liedke

At his site, Liedke reviewed recent releases β€œAll Quiet on the Western Front,” β€œAvatar: The Way of Water,” β€œGlass Onion,” β€œPuss in Boots: The Last Wish,” Guillermo del Toro’s β€œPinocchio,” β€œThe Whale” and β€œBabylon.”

He also wrote a piece about award ceremonies and their college football bowl counterparts.

Ruth Maramis

On FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed new films β€œAvatar: The Way of Water,” β€œGlass Onion,” β€œSpirited” and β€œBabylon.” She also wrote a list of five essential Jane Austen adaptations, which actors would be best for a biopic on poet Robert Burns and her picks for best breakout performers from the past year.

Mark McPherson

At his site, McPherson reviewed the new release β€œBabylon.” He also reviewed β€œPuss in Boots: The Last Wish,” β€œLiving” and Guillermo del Toro’s β€œPinocchio” on his YouTube channel.
