A nice mix this week! Two new releases get the full review treatment: Couture and the creature feature Kraken. And on the physical media side, there’s a fresh 4K review of Dust Bunny.

Joe Botten – The MN Movie Man

Plenty to dig into this week! Two new releases that opened this past weekend get the full review treatment: The Death of Robin Hood and the queer horror outing Leviticus. The MN Movie Man also caught up with the blazingly good action flick The Furious — a real hammer-down good time that more than lives up to its early buzz.

And while he won’t be reviewing the new Supergirl, he’s pointing his cape backward instead with a retro look at the 1984 original — Supergirl, a film that deserves a fresh set of eyes.

Over at Loud and Clear Reviews, there’s a review of the latest trip to the toy box: Toy Story 5.

On the physical media front, two new releases got the full treatment: Difficult People: The Complete Series and the freshly restored Private Benjamin.

The MN Movie Man has also been busy screening films for the Tribeca Film Festival, currently underway in New York City. Now in its 25th year, the festival is serving up another strong slate — so stay tuned over the next few weeks for mini reviews on Instagram, giving you a peek at which titles to keep an eye out for.

Joe Botten – The MN Movie Man

Since the last update, The MN Movie Man has logged a lot of miles and even more movies — including a stretch out in Los Angeles that turned into a full-on repertory pilgrimage. Rather than chase the newest releases, he spent the trip hopping between the city’s legendary big-screen institutions: Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at the Academy Museum’s David Geffen Theater, a back-to-back of Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion and The Wedding Singer at the Aero, the gloriously over-the-top Cutthroat Island at the Vista, Cinderella at Tarantino’s New Beverly, The Rocketeer‘s 35th Anniversary screening at the El Capitan, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone reimagined in immersive dome form at COSM. He also squeezed in new releases, Backrooms, and Masters of the Universe while in town. Keep an eye on Instagram for the full trip diary and which screenings were worth the airfare.

Back home, the review pile has grown considerably. New write-ups are up for Carolina Caroline, Hungry, Chum, Pitfall, Office Romance, Affection, I Love Boosters, Remarkably Bright Creatures, the Cape Fear remake, and the documentary The Thing Expanded — plus earlier additions like Michael, Hokum, and a fresh look at the 1985 ensemble classic Clue.

On the physical media side, there’s a healthy stack of 4K reviews, including catalog favorites Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Red Sonja, Soldier, Innerspace, Blue Thunder, and John Carpenter’s Vampires, plus a horror double feature of The Eye and The Birthday.

Over at Loud and Clear Reviews, recent contributions include Mother Mary, Power Ballad, Obsession, the Polish drama Erupcja starring Charli XCX, and Stolen Kingdom — plus, for anyone still recovering from The Devil Wears Prada 2, a fun rundown of Miranda Priestly’s favorite movies.

Joe Botten – The MN Movie Man

Heading into Easter weekend also means we’re just a few more sleeps away from the 45th Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival.  The MN Movie Man looked through all 200+ films on this year’s lineup and picked out the titles he’ll be keeping an eye on. He’s also put together a list of films playing at the festival that he’s already been lucky enough to see — and thinks you should absolutely make time for too. You can check out that full festival preview on the site.

There are also a few new reviews up, including The Drama, plus the documentary The Ascent, which recently won the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival. And for creature feature fans with a soft spot for old-school monster movies, The Yeti delivers a heavy dose of nostalgia — a soundstage-shot snowbound monster movie that still manages to be both entertaining and surprisingly creepy.
