The Academy Award nominations are out and the Minnesota Film Critics Alliance had some thoughts.
In addition to members continuing to publish reviews about nominated films, there were also several pieces dedicated to the biggest winners in the announcement and what pictures were snubbed. The coverage wasn’t limited to just Oscar flicks, though, with several other films reviewed.
Here’s what the alliance has been up to lately.
Joe Botten
At his site, Botten reviewed new releases “The Greatest Night in Pop,” “The Seeding,” “Hundreds of Beavers” and “Argylle.”
Eli Brau
For A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed 2023 films “Self Reliance,” “The Teacher’s Lounge” and “The Zone of Interest.” He also wrote about 2001’s “Shrek,” 2018’s “In Fabric,” 2019’s “Saint Maud,” and 2022’s “Amanda.
Additionally, he continued a look back at the original “Star Trek” films with reviews on “The Search for Spock,” “The Voyage Home,” “The Final Frontier,” “The Undiscovered Country” and “Generations.” He also ranked those films, as well as the Oscar Best Picture nominees and films released by A24 in 2022.
Brian Eggert
At Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed recent releases “Society of the Snow,” “Hundreds of Beavers” and “How to Have Sex.” He also wrote about 1990’s “Goodfellas” and 2022’s “Still Working 9 to 5.”
Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl
For their podcast Horror Rewind, Florence and Hafdahl covered “True Detective: Night Country” in one episode and true crime series in another.
Hunter Friesen
At The Cinema Dispatch, Friesen shared his winners and losers from the Academy Award nominations. He also reviewed the new spy flick “Argylle.”
Jay Gabler
For the Duluth News Tribune, Gabler ranked Oscar contenders and wrote about film producer Mandy June Turpin who has made two movies in the Twin Ports.
Kyle Goethe
For their series Kyle and Nick on Film, Goethe was joined by Nicholas Palodichuk to discuss 1997’s “Starship Troopers” and the new drama “The Iron Claw” Goethe also reviewed 1998’s “Fallen” and 2022’s “The Blackening” for the series.
Paul McGuire Grimes
For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed the drama “Origin” and also shared what films he felt were overlooked by the Academy. He also appeared on ABC affiliate KSTP’s series Twin Cities Live to preview films in 2024.
Matthew Liedke
At his site, Liedke reviewed the 2023 musical drama “The Color Purple,” as well as recent releases “I.S.S.,” “The Beekeeper” and “Miller’s Girl.”
Ruth Maramis
On FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed 2023 films “Poor Things,” “Foe” and “Freud’s Last Session.” She also reviewed 2021’s “When Hitler Stole pink Rabbit.” Plus, she shared her thoughts on the 2024 Oscar nominations.
Mark McPherson
At his site, McPherson reviewed 2023 films “Freud’s Last Session,” “All of Us Strangers” and “Origin.” He also produced a video sharing his issues with the Razzies.
Tyler Strandberg
For Cinefied, Strandberg reviewed the action film “Argylle.”
