Alliance Lately: Issue No. 80

The “Barbenheimer” phenomenon has taken the movie world by storm, capturing the attention of moviegoers and dominating the box office.

Members of the MNFCA were all over the release of both films, with plenty of reviews and commentary. Those two weren’t the only releases in recent weeks, though, and Minnesota critics reviewed a number of other films, too.

Here’s what the Alliance has been up to lately.

Joe Botten

At his site, Botten reviewed new releases “Barbie,” “Fear the Night,” “Cobweb,” “Oppenheimer,” “Haunted Mansion,” “Happiness for Beginners,” “Theater Camp,” “Afire” and “Talk to Me.”

Eli Brau

At A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed July releases “Insidious: The Red Door,” “Joy Ride,” “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie.” He also released rankings for Christopher Nolan films and the “Mission: Impossible” movies.

Brian Eggert

For Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed recent films “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Earth Mama,” “The Beanie Bubble,” “Haunted Mansion,” “Talk to Me,” “Theater Camp,” “Afire,” “Dreamin’ Wild” and “Shortcomings.” He also wrote about the 2000 drama “Erin Brockovich.”

Hunter Friesen

On The Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed new movies “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Theater Camp,” “Talk to Me,” “Afire” and “Dreamin’ Wild.”

Jay Gabler

For the Duluth News Tribune, Gabler reviewed the drama “Oppenheimer” and wrote a column about “Barbie.”

Kyle Goethe and Nicholas Palodichuk

On their series Kyle and Nick on Film, Goethe and Palodichuk discussed 1963’s “The Haunting,” 1973’s “Badlands,” 1987’s “Innerspace” and 1990’s “Tremors.”

Paul McGuire Grimes

For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed new films “Theater Camp,” “Haunted Mansion,” “Oppenheimer,” “They Cloned Tyrone” and “Barbie.” He also appeared on ABC Affiliate KSTP to talk movies with the Twin Cities Live crew.

Matt Hambidge

At News From the Couch, Hambidge reviewed the historical drama “Oppenheimer.”

Danny Haslach

Haslach’s podcast FilmBird had an episode all about the Barbenheimer phenomenon and how it benefitted both “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie.”

Frank Lee

For the Brainerd Dispatch, Lee wrote about recent films “Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie.”

Matthew Liedke

At his site, Liedke reviewed recent releases “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken,” “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie.”

Ruth Maramis

On FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed new films “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie” and “The Miracle Club.”

Mark McPherson

At his site, McPherson reviewed both “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie.” He also wrote about “Barbie” for Film Inquiry, produced a video review of the Rock Hudson documentary “All That Heaven Allowed” and published a column about “Sound of Freedom.”

Tyler Strandberg

Strandberg reviewed the historical film “Oppenheimer” for InSession Film and wrote a column about the “Barbenheimer” situation for Next Best Picture.
