Alliance Lately: Issue No. 72

Happy Oscars week!

The past month has been a busy one for the movie world, and that includes Minnesota Film Critics. On top of selecting the winners for the 2023 MNFCA Awards, members were also reviewing several new releases and writing film-related columns.

Check out what the Alliance has been up to lately.

Joe Botten

At his site, Botten reviewed new releases “Consecration,” “The Outwaters,” “Your Place or Mine,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “My Happy Ending,” “We Have a Ghost,” “The Quiet Girl,” “Unseen,” “Creed III” and “Scream VI.”

Eli Brau

For A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed recent films “Devotion,” “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” “Infinity Pool,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quntumania,” “Sharper,” “When You Finish Saving the World,” “Eo,” “Cocaine Bear,” “We Have a Ghost,” “Something in the Dirt” and “Spoiler Alert.”

He also wrote about “Creed” and “Creed II,” as well as “Rocky.” He wrote about the first two “Ant-Man” pictures.

Brian Eggert

At Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed new films including “Sharper,” “Skinamarink,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Marlowe,” “Cocaine Bear,” “Creed III,” “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre” and “Scream VI.”

He also wrote about 1971’s “A Touch of Zen,” 1996’s “Scream,” 1997’s “Scream 2,” 2000’s “Scream 3” and 2011’s “Scream IV” and 2018’s “Creed II.”

Hunter Friesen

For the Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed new movies “Sharper,” “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Marlowe,” “Creed III” and “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.”

Joseph Froemming

For his Joe-Down series, Froemming reviewed the 2009 action sequel “Crank: High Voltage.”

Jay Gabler

At the Duluth News Tribune, Jay Gabler reviewed the romantic drama “One Fine Morning.” He also reviewed the biographical film “Emily,” which focused on the novelist Emily Brontë, for The Tangential.

Kyle Goethe and Nicholas Palodichuk

For their YouTube series Kyle and Nick on Film, Goethe and Palodichuk reviewed the 2021 documentary “Schumacher” about the Formula 1 racer Michael Schumacher, as well as the 2022 drama “Aftersun.”

Paul McGuire Grimes

For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” “Your Place or Mine,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Sharper,” “Creed III” and “Scream VI.” Grimes also appeared on the show Twin Cities Live to talk movies on Feb. 10 and 24.

Matt Hambidge

On his site News from the Couch, Hambidge reviewed new releases “Your Place or Mine,” “At Midnight,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.”

Danny Haslach

Recent episodes of Haslach’s podcast FilmBird covered new films “Knock at the Cabin” and “Cocaine Bear.”

Eric Houston

For his Bad Movie Bros series, Houston reviewed the 1989 action picture “Gleaming the Cube.”

Frank Lee

Lee wrote about recent releases “Cocaine Bear,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Knock at the Cabin” and “Jesus Revolution” for Forum Communications.

Matthew Liedke

At his site, Liedke reviewed new films “Cocaine Bear” and “Creed III.”

Ruth Maramis

At FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness” as well as recent releases “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Emily.” She also wrote about the 2021 drama “Birds of Paradise” and 2022’s comedy “Phantom of the Open.”

Additionally, she listed five romantic dramas directed by women with POC leads for Valentine’s Day, and shared her 10 favorite Michelle Yeoh performances.

Plus, she wrote about 1993’s “Sleepless in Seattle” after a visit to city in the Pacific Northwest. Finally, she published a column about the representation of women in Hollywood for International Women’s Day.

Mark McPherson

On his site, McPherson reviewed new films “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Cocaine Bear” and “Creed III.” He also produced a video essay about legacy sequels on YouTube and wrote a review of the action flick “Little Dixie” for Film Inquiry.
